Det lykkedes - med lidt simpelt håndværk efterfølgende.

Hele proceduren for at installere java på ubuntu så det virker i firefox
skulle så være
følgende:
1) 'sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list'
    tilføj linien: 'deb http://jrfonseca.dyndns.org/debian ./ ' til
denne liste, gem
    og luk editoren.
2) 'sudo apt-get update'
3) 'sudo apt-get install j2re1.4'
4) cd /usr/lib/j2se/1.4/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/
5) 'sudo cp libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/ '
6) genstart firefox
